The ability to astral project is something which every person already possesses; we are in fact born being able to do this. So why are there those who can astral project at will and those who have much less success with the technique? The answer is simple practice.

Astral projecting is an ancient practice that should be treated with the respect that it deserves, much like meditation or yoga. There are a variety of types and names that it is known by. There are also different ways to astral project.

One type of astral projection is lucid dreaming. This occurs when you are dreaming and know it. When your conscious mind knows you are dreaming you can astral project very easily. Get into the habit of telling yourself ‘I am dreaming’ when you are having a lucid dream.

Lucid dreaming lets you take control of what happens in your dreams; but it can take a while to be able to do this on a regular basis. This means that it is not an ideal way to astral project, at least for those who are new to the practice.

All of us have astral projected at some time in the past; maybe even many times, as it happens.

When you awake from a dream and are able to remember every detail vividly, down to the very smallest elements, you have had an experience of astral projecting. You may have had this happen to you many times this shows you that you can astral project!

The first step to astral projection is having the knowledge that you can do it. Affirm to yourself that you can do this; this will clear away all of the doubt which prevents you from being able to astral project.

By practicing relaxation techniques including meditation, you can prepare yourself to astral project. Meditation is perhaps the most effective technique to prepare yourself to astral project. The important thing is finding a meditation technique which allows you to become completely relaxed.

Choose a room where you will not be distracted, have a comfortable place to sit and where you will be able to have peace and quiet.

Do not focus on any problems you are having. Center your thoughts on your breathing, breath slow and deep. Picture your problems and stresses flowing out with each breath.

This is very effective in achieving the deep state of relaxation needed to astral project.

The next step is to go into an altered conscious state. Keep focusing on your breathing, your problems are gone, your mind is blank.

You’ll feel your breathing become slower and deeper still. Concentrate completely on relaxing your body more and more.

Work your way up towards your head, beginning from the toes and relaxing every part of your body one by one as you go. There are two techniques which work very well here. The first is to visualize each part of your body relaxing as you move upwards, telling yourself as you go that each part is relaxing.

You can also tense each part of your body as you go and then breathe out that tension as you exhale. Once you are totally relaxed you are ready for the next stage of successfully managing to astral project.

Your body and your mind will be completely relaxed and it would be very easy to fall asleep, but don’t! To stay alert, you can repeat a phrase to yourself. It doesn’t matter what this phrase is it could be as simple as ‘walk the dog, walk the dog’.

Your mind may want to drift off and cause thoughts to start flowing through it. You do not want this to happen. You need to keep your focus on a phrase to keep these thoughts out. You will have to end the session and start over if you lose your focus.

There are different ways to achieve a state of altered consciousness. You can repeat your chosen phrase or do it another way. Imagine a glowing light, and then imagine you entering it and transforming yourself into this body of light.

This is referred to as the body of light technique.

You can watch for these three signs to know that you are beginning to astral project.

One is feeling a sensation of motion, even though your body will be at rest. Another is “seeing” colors and lights with your eyes closed.

Finally is beginning to hear voices telling you either to stop your meditation or to continue on and astral project. These signs will let you know for sure that you are astral projecting.
